Ithika Visit Ithika aboard one of our charter catamarans. Ithika, (as we like to spell it) was made famous by the books (or more correctly the poems) by Homer. This island is named as the home of King Ulysses, the hero in the "Odyssey". Today many historians and readers of Homer dispute that modern-day Ithika is in fact the same as that as of old. What we do know however is that this island has had this name for many many years. It is a beautiful green island with a unique charm that can not be replicated. Those captured by it's spell will return year after year to drink in the tranquility, peacefulness, and well, just Ithika. Of the stops in villages / towns available to us on yachts, the 3 water-side towns on the Eastern side are of importance, namely Vathi, Kioni and Frikas. Kioni and Frikas are very very close together, both a short distance North of the capital of the island, Vathi. Vathi ('Deep' in English) is the main port of the island, receiving a number of ferrys and day-trippers during the summer months, as well as a ferry during the winter. This is a larger town, and as such has more (but not many) shopping facilities than Kioni and Frikas. The latter 2 small villages are more picturesque, offering tavernas so close to the water, any closer and you will have wet feet. Ithika is a favorite stop for many floatilla fleets as well as charter yacts. Along with these three 'harbors', the Southeastern part of the island has some wonderfull larger beaches safe for overnight summer anchoring. Spending the night not at a town really is wonderful way of spending the night, and is something different. Your skipper knows this island very well. Although the tows are nice, it is often recomended that you stop for an early lunch at Kioni or Frikas, the anchor off one of the beaches for the night.
